About Bring Chicago Home

Over 68,000 Chicagoans are experiencing homelessness on the streets, in shelters, or living doubled-up. The best way to tackle this challenge is to strategically redistribute wealth and invest resources in permanent housing with wraparound supportive services.

Bring Chicago Home is a coalition that has been advocating for a proposal to raise $100 million a year to fight homelessness by changing the sales tax on property sales from flat to progressive. Currently if you sell real estate, you’re taxed just at under one percent of the price, regardless of if you’re selling a studio or a mansion or an office tower. The proposal wouldn’t change annual property taxes, but it would lower the one-time tax on real-estate sales under $1 million, and it would raise that tax if you’re fortunate enough to sell your real estate for over $1 million. Bring Chicago Home is a referendum question on the ballot, and early voting is open now. Election day is March 19.
